Monthly Newsletter = March 2010 =

Dear All,

Several activities marked the month of February including the Annual Catholic School Conference, NHS induction, History Fair, the launching of STA Plant Tissue Culture Lab, and other activities.

Monthly Recap

The Archdiocese of Agaña Scholarship Fund awarded $2,000.00 to STA for 2010-2011 academic year. The check was handed out to STA Principal on February 3, 2010, by the Most Reverend Anthony Sablan Apuron, OFM Cap., D.D., Metropolitan Archbishop of Agaña.

The Archdiocese of Agaña Catholic Educators Conference was held at Father Duenas Memorial School Phoenix Center on February 5, 2010. The theme of this year’s conference was: “Catholic Schools-Dividends for Life”. STA faculty and staff attended the conference.

A workshop for First Aid/CPR certification was conducted at STA on February 6, 2010, and was attended by eight members of our staff. This brings our total certified faculty and staff to nearly 100%.

STA Chapter of the NHS (STA Lions) inducted its first members on February 12, 2010. Sixty nine percent of applicants were recommended for NHS induction.

STA Second Annual Guam History Fair was held on February 26, 2010. Staff from “Guam Preservation Trust”, “Guampedia”, Chamorro Language Program and Guam PDN were among the judges. We take this opportunity to thank our visitors and to congratulate the coordinator of the event, Mr. Mojkowski, and all the freshmen and sophomores for their brilliant research projects.  We are grateful to the juniors and seniors for their participation. A selected number of students will represent STA at the Island-wide Guam History Competition on March 27, 2010.

The second Parent-Teacher Conference was held on February 26, 2010, from 1:00pm to 6:00pm. Parent involvement remained high at above 67% of participation rate.

STA opened a “Plant Tissue Culture Lab” in February 2010, using micro propagation technique with the help of scientists from the Plant Pathology Department of the University of Guam. This is a great achievement that needs to be celebrated for student learning outcomes, and sends a strong message to affirm our commitment to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) coalition. Congratulations to Mrs. Yahn and all the students involved in the experiment.

At the faculty meeting of February 24, 2010, it was suggested that daily breakfast sale and weekly bake sale be included in regular fundraiser activities for STA Scholarship Fund. A fifteen percent sale tax will be applied to all fundraiser activities to benefit the Scholarship Fund. Funds raised for travel off island are exempted from taxation.

The Middle Schools’ Visit Series was a success and ended during the month of February, 2010. We traveled to about a dozen schools, spoke to over 380 students and invited over 100 students with their parents to visit our school. Placement tests are now held twice a month on Saturdays, from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. Inquiries and student interests are growing and we are hopeful to reach and exceed our enrollment projections for school year 2010-2011.

Student Life

Two students from STA participated in the Catholic School Eight Grade Retreat as facilitators on February 19, 2010, at Bishop Baumgartner Memorial School in Sinajana.

STA School Choir, Concentus, continues to shine at the Cathedral-Basilica in Hagatna every Sunday at 11:30am. Please come and support our students.

Three new students joined the STA family in February 2010, bringing the total enrollment to 45.

Below are preliminary college admissions and four-year scholarships for some of our senior classmen:
